Well we left Nerrigunda and have headed south to Eden, the drive down is beautiful. We stopped in at the Bega cheese factory to buy more cheese (9 packets of cheese and slices cost $15) and to meet an old school buddy of Jules and her husband. We had coffee and lunch without Colleen and Richard as they were having brake issues with their Landcruiser. But we eventually got to see them and agreed to meet up in Eden one day for lunch.
We stayed a little past Eden at a place called Wonboyn Lake at the Wonboyn cabin & caravan park. A beautiful little spot about 300 meters from the lake which is fed from the ocean. We drove the 7klms of dirt road to the beach and there was not another soul in sight, so of course I wanted to strip off and go skinny dipping in the ocean but the water was freezing and the weather was worse, rain and wind, so I gave it a miss.
Eden is a lovely coastal town, very picturesque, but also very touristy, which of course makes it very expensive. For example, we went to the local smoke house and they were asking $60 a kilo for smoked salmon, $39 a kilo for smoked prawns just to name a couple. We went to a fish and chip shop at the wharf for lunch and they wanted $15 for fish 'n' chips. So we went back into town and got it at a reasonable price there.
I can see the attraction for tourists to Eden, but really wasn't my cup of tea. And I would look out of town for cheaper accommodation too, but it is worth a stop over.
On Saturday we went to Boydtown to meet Colleen and Richard for lunch at the Seahorse Inn (about 15klms south of Eden), and wow what a spot. The inn itself has been fully restored as it is an old place, and it is magnificent. The food on the menu was expensive but not excessively so, but they also have a bar menu and a specials board. The food was wonderful, the only downer was it was raining so we couldn't eat outside as the beach is only 50 meters away. We also had coffee which was lovely too.
All in all our experience of the south coast of New South Wales has been an eye opener as it is absolutely awesome and if you get the chance to travel there then do so, you won't regret it. Also the rest areas along NSW roads beat any we have seen in Qld or Vic, so cudos to them for that.
Our journey now takes us into Victoria through Orborst, Lakes Entrance and on to Sale. Then on to Wilsons Promontory and then in to Melbourne for Christmas, so until then........
