Berlin — Berlin, Germany
This morning breakfast was again at the restaurant with a modest choice of eggs, rolls, breads, spreads, juices and some cold meats to scoff. We then met up for the Third Reich walking tour, where our guide Caroline was a font of knowledge in both literary and historical information. We began outside the Reichstag, saw the Brandenburg Gate get cleaned and ruin a good photo opportunity, through the Jewish memorial (which was closed), stood in the car park atop of where Hitler's bunker and the site of his death was, to the Topography of Terror, finance ministry which was formerly the Luftwaffe headquarters and finally to Checkpoint Charlie. After our tour we went to Postdamerplatz to search for more Pandora charms, alas they were sold out...and so we had our first ever Starbucks, mainly to use their WC and wifi. We decided we'd go back to Hofbrau house for lunch and took an hour or so walk, via a supermarket for pick up some dinner. Hofbrau house was even better in Berlin than Munich. Bec and I got a share platter for two at about €40, which included a pork knuckle, sausages, bratwurst, roast ham, sauerkraut with bacon kibbles, dark beer gravy, mustard...there's probably more I'm forgetting...I also ordered a pretzel and a 1L stein. Fully satisfied and much fatter, we wandered back toward the East Side Gallery and collected a magnet and old Berlin postcard from the Wall House souvenir shop. Back to the hostel and the girls were excited to get ready for the Nightlife tour in a proper bathroom for a change. We hopped the coach of another TopDeck group and joined forces for the evening. We were given a free Beck's beer at the meeting point, which felt very odd just to have beers in a public forum in such a large group as the Australian liquor laws I'm used to would have it confiscated and be fined. Not all the girls enjoyed Beck's beer and one of the boys was gluten intolerant, so I was about 3 beers ahead on everyone else after about an hour. From there we went to the Silverfish bar, where with every drink you get a bonus shot. At the second bar, the tour leader brought free shots around, while other drinks were still cheap, we scored two free shots. At the third bar we managed three free shots and by the end of this bar one girl was near paralytic, but neat everyone else was good and rowdy (without being to troublesome...although one of the guys from the other group did "borrow" a bike from the street). On top of the €24 tour cost, Bec and I had spent about €32 on our own drinks, at last tally it was about 8 beers (usually about €3 each) & 5 mixed vodkas (at about €5 each), but had managed to score 8 free shots between us. Not bad value at all! We were then taken to the Matrix nightclub right near our hostel, which took about 30 minutes of walking and by a free late night train ride. Unfortunately you must still pay for water near everywhere in Europe and as it had been some time since our last beverage, momentum was lacking. Thirsty and tired, we decided to walk the 50 metres back to the Plus hostel and sleep it off.
