Crossing the border — Ko Kut, Thailand

Ko Kut, Thailand

Where I stayed
Cham's House Resort

We left our lovely river home at 8am and took the boat to the Tatai landing. We were met by our driver who was to take us to the Cambodian/Thai border. The scenery on the way was stunning but the road was horrendous with huge potholes at every point. Our taxi driver was a funny man, he spent the 40 minutes to the border mouthing off about how corrupt the government was and that how he wasn't earning enough money. Typical taxi driver really, we could have been in a black cab in London! The border was much less chaotic than we thought it would be although we only really had the slenderest of grips on what was going on and what we had to do! The taxi driver handed our baggage to a lady with an over-large wheel barrow and off he went. The wheel barrow baggage lady had it all sussed and just kept grinning. Cambodian immigration was easy, no queue and passports stamped in quick time. We then followed the lady - she knew what the score was - and passed through no-man's land to the Thai side. Again, this was relatively quick and efficient. We were then met by our driver for the rest of the trip to Trat and the baggage lady got a nice tip for being lovely and being our guide and for having to make a living doing what she does. The difference on the Thai side of the border was immediately apparent. Great roads, better cars, better housing. We sped along and arrived in Trat at about 11am. We asked the driver to take us to the ferry terminal at Laem Sok Pier so we could catch our boat to Koh Kood. He dropped us off at the ferry terminal about 24kms from town. Thankfully the ferry company had our booking and we were issued tickets and sat and had an iced coffee while we waited for the van to take us the short distance to the jetty. The ferry took just over an hour and we watched a Thai comedy cops and robbers film that although we couldn't understand a word of it was really funny. Missed the end though which was a shame! Our hotel car was there to meet us and soon we were bouncing along mud tracks across the island to our hotel. We are right on the beach and the views are terrific. Our room is beautiful. The weather is awful! We set off for a walk along the beach and were caught in a rain storm and it hasn't stopped since. Hope it improves, we've got the next 4 days here......
